Time to Go Grouse Hunting
Labor Day is over and its time for me to move on to grouse hunting with my two setters. I’m putting the fishing blog to bed until spring. I hope new visitors to the site during the winter take the time to scroll through the summer and get a feel for Salmon fishing in the [...]
The wind is cooking at nearly 40 mph at the weather buoy. I’d say that no one will be fishing in the morning.
Hurricane Earl is getting all the media attention as it races up the east coast, but the wind with no name is getting our attention here. Tropical storm winds are 30- 40 mph and that is what the weather buoy is reading now! They don’t call it a tropical storm around here and I’m not [...]
Despite the wind big catches are still coming off the island.
Its been windy and when the boats could get to the island there were some big catches coming in. Yesterday morning I counted 14 kings hanging on one fish board for a photo and another cooler bulging with its lid open. The 4-year fish should be thinning by now more than they are – don’t [...]
Leland Salmon Report – Very Late August
The last few days fishing has been slow, but that all changed this morning out at the north end of North Manitou as you can see in this picture. One of our down riggers broke and because the temperature was down around 120 feet we only fished with two lines and that was good enough.
August 27, 2010 Leland Fishing Report.
Charter boats scattered from one end of the island to the other and the results were largly the same. Not many big kings were caught, but a steelie, trout and 2&3-year kings made most of the catch. Inside the island the water was nice, but once you got out of its protection it chopped up [...]
August 25, 2010 Leland Fishing Report
When I got to the boat this morning the flag was standing out pretty straight and I didn’t think we’d be going out. But then one of the other charter boats who left early called in to say that the seas weren’t too bad and that coupled with some game fishermen on my boat sealed [...]

August 22, 2010 Cloudy and Rough, But the Fish Didn’t Care.
Mike brought Alex and Christi out fishing this morning and despite the rough conditions we had 10 or 12 hits and 6 fish in the box by 8:30 when they decided that they’d had a great morning and were ready to go in. The kings were down about 80 in the middle of the island [...]
August 21, 2010 Leland Fishing Report
The storms that blew through the county last night still had people talking about them this morning. It was an impressive show. By morning the wind was down and lake calm, contrary to the forecast. All the boats that went out did good, catching between 6 and 12 kings. The currents that move the temperature [...]
August 20, 2010 Leland Fishing Report
My camera battery was dead this morning so I couldn’t take any pics of fish, but I do have information. I saw the fish box that a private boat brought in from the island and it was full of big kings. I don’t know if these were caught yesterday or this morning, or both, but [...]
